What Plex finds on disk.

Pick the Plex preset and MetaTana names folders, artwork and subtitles the way Plex's local media assets expect.

  • Movies as Title (Year), plus {edition-Director's Cut} when a movie has an edition. Plex ignores edition names over 32 characters, so MetaTana shortens them.
  • Show folders carry the first-air year, so two shows with the same name stay apart.
  • poster.jpg and fanart.jpg in each folder, Season02.jpg in each season folder, and episode images named exactly like the episode file.
  • Subtitles end in .en.srt, .forced or .sdh. Plex reads .hi as Hindi, so hearing-impaired subtitles use .sdh.

  • Wrong matches

    Every file gets a confidence word: Good, Fair or Weak. Good matches file themselves. The rest wait in the Inbox with the reason.

  • IDs in names

    MetaTana reads Plex-style IDs such as {tmdb-603} and {imdb-tt0133093} in file and folder names and looks them up directly.

  • Missing artwork

    Posters, backdrops, logos and season art, saved under the names Plex reads.

  • Full rescans

    After filing, renames and edits, MetaTana refreshes only the folders that changed, including the folder a file left.

  • Watched state

    Watched state and resume points sync between MetaTana and Plex, on demand or on a schedule.

  • A bad rename pass

    Renames, moves, approvals, duplicate cleanup, artwork and edits can be undone in Activity.

NFO files, only if you want them.

Plex's built-in agents don't read NFO files. MetaTana writes them for Kodi, Jellyfin or Emby on the same library, or for an NFO agent you install in Plex.

  • Leave NFO off and Plex reads names, IDs, artwork and subtitles from disk.
  • Turn it on to share one library between Plex and Kodi, Jellyfin or Emby.
  • Your edits and locked fields stay in MetaTana either way, and Rescrape keeps them.

FAQ

Does Plex read NFO files?

Not with its built-in agents. Plex reads folder and file names, provider IDs in names, and local artwork and subtitles, and MetaTana writes all of those. It writes NFO files too when Kodi, Jellyfin or Emby share the library, or when you install an NFO agent in Plex.

Does MetaTana replace Plex?

No. Plex stays your server and player, and MetaTana is not affiliated with Plex. MetaTana prepares the files on disk and asks Plex to refresh.

Does MetaTana change my video files?

No. It renames and moves files only in folders where you allow it, and writes artwork and subtitle files beside them. The video itself is never edited, and renames and moves can be undone.

Do I need Pro for Plex?

No. Matching, naming, NFO and artwork, Plex refresh and watched sync are Free. Free scans first and you add a free TMDb key later. Pro adds hosted metadata with no key, AI Vision for hard files, subtitle search and Trakt.
