MetaTana v2.2.0
Most people can update without doing anything. On a Mac, 2.2 needs macOS 13 (Ventura) or later; a Mac on macOS 12 stays on 2.1.
Drops and the Inbox
- To check asks once per show. A title you pick for one episode answers the show's other episodes waiting on the same question; past 50 files it asks you to confirm first.
- An answer for a show already in your Library takes that show's type, so a new anime episode joins the anime show and is filed in Anime/.
- A drop never moves half a show. While one episode still waits in To check, the rest of that show stays put, and once you settle it the drop offers Rename this show?.
- Dropping a folder such as TV Shows/To be sorted pulls shows out of the quality folders inside it into one folder per show. Dropping TV Shows itself keeps its quality folders.
- Episodes in a show folder with its own tvshow.nfo get their episode titles, and the NFO stays as it is.
- A disc image that holds several episodes (1x04 1x05 1x06.iso) is no longer a copy of one episode, and the Same name sheet pairs such files by every episode they hold.
- A drop no longer files episodes under TV Shows/To be sorted/TV Shows/.
- In a browser (Docker and NAS installs), dropping a folder whose drop is still open opens that drop instead of starting a second one.
- Looking never counts more files than it found ("21 of 19 files"), and the Files view says Stays for a file Rename leaves as it is.
- A phone or screen recording beside a film asks whether it is a home video, not an extra.
- Undo this drop and Activity's "Drop undone" count the files the Undo put back.
- After you add a TMDb key, the drop page updates when the key sheet's Scrape finishes, without a reload.
- Your own Rescrape, rename or edit on a title in an open drop goes through instead of sending you back to the drop.
- Every Inbox row shows the title's poster, and a long Rename to folder wraps clear of Approve.
- Approving a match in the Inbox keeps your own NFO files and posters and only adds the missing ones.
- Use and Use this on an Inbox row the scan already matched now keep your pick.
- Picking a match for one episode clears the show's old suggestions for another series from the Inbox.
Matching movies, TV and anime
- A movie named in another script or spelling (千と千尋の神隠し (2001), 기생충 (2019), Kimi no Na wa (2016)) is offered as a likely match instead of No match.
- A one-word title such as Frieren finds its show, in a scan and in a typed search.
- An anime search lists the anime before a live-action series of the same name (ONE PIECE, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop).
- A movie's year is its first release, not its release in your country, so 1917 stays 1917 (2019).
- An episode file named with its title (The Mandalorian - S01E01 - Chapter 1) is no longer held for review when the provider's title agrees.
- A show whose exact title another show has waits in the Inbox when no year tells them apart. On Pro you can fix a wrong show without your own TMDb key.
- On Pro, every scrape places an episode named only by its number (Show - Episode 5) from the show's seasons.
- Files in a show's season folder stay that show's episodes even when their names don't say so (Black Mirror/Season 1/The National Anthem.mkv), and S04/The.Office.US.401 is S04E01.
- In a folder with no type, a show's special and its tvshow-trailer belong to the show, and a film beside another show's episode stays a film.
- Shows are named after the show, not the library folder or a [tvdbid-…] tag. Two spellings of one show's name, or a different apostrophe, make one show.
- A movie NFO for another year asks you first (Jaws (1975).mkv beside a Jaws 2 NFO). A broken NFO with no year takes the file's year.
- Videos in Family Videos, Family Movies, Camera Roll and DCIM folders are home videos, and so are screen recordings and WhatsApp videos.
- Anime episodes named with a number and a title are placed by the show's season list, and anime films in an Anime folder are listed as films.
- Creditless openings and endings (NCOP, OP01) are extras. An OVA or special numbered like an episode waits for you.
- Two films of a series are never merged through a shared collection ID. <edition>NONE</edition> in an NFO means no edition.
- A special you filed with Fix episode is no longer held for review, and Mark as special (Season 0) works when the show lists no specials.
- Picking another series in Rescrape replaces the old series' overview, first air date and country, and no longer fails with a database error.
- A disc file with no episode number waits in the Inbox for you to say which episode it is.
- Duplicates no longer offers to trash a show's differently numbered episodes as copies of each other.
- A TypeScript .ts file is not a video, and on Linux or macOS a backslash in a file name stays part of the name.
NFO, artwork and renaming
- Rename, Organize, a drop's Rename, Rescrape and Autopilot leave alone titles MetaTana has not identified yet. Write NFO no longer writes title-only NFOs for them, which stopped Kodi looking the show up.
- Write NFO puts no movie.nfo in a folder that holds other titles, and an episode with no season gets no NFO.
- A show's Rescrape with Write NFO writes every episode's NFO, and with Rename files renames every episode as one Rename with its own Undo.
- Write NFO, Fetch artwork, Subtitle search and Rename & organize on a show card act on every episode, not one.
- Rename's Undo puts back every file the rename moved or replaced, including a second copy's poster and actor photos.
- A second copy of a movie joins the first copy's folder with a copy number, and Undo brings both back. Two copies with one name no longer overwrite each other's NFO, and Rescrape updates both.
- Organize puts every episode of a show in one folder named from the show and its first-air year. A Director's Cut episode keeps its edition in the file name.
- When a show folder is renamed, its season art, tvshow-trailer and the extras' NFOs go with it.
- A folder left with only system files or NAS thumbnail folders is removed after a move. Undo puts it back.
- Organize moves films back out of a stray Movies folder that an earlier Organize made inside your Movies folder.
- Renames that only change capital letters work on Linux SMB mounts (Erased to ERASED).
- Rename, Rescrape and Inbox renames start from your saved naming patterns.
- After Organize or its Undo, a title's poster follows the file instead of showing "No artwork".
- Rename, Organize and Rescrape say what moves with each file ("Moves 1 NFO · 4 artwork"), and Organize says why its preview is empty.
- Fetch artwork saves each episode's own thumbnail and previews what it will download.
- A collection's set.nfo never lands in one film's own folder.
- Undo removes the actor photos MetaTana copied to Kodi's names.
- Autopilot's tidy step no longer makes a second TV Shows folder inside one.
Library
- Delete has Remove, keep files. It takes titles out of the Library and leaves the files where they are, later scans skip them, and Inbox › Ignored lists them with Restore.
- A bulk Delete is one Activity row with one Undo, and its dialog says how many files go to MetaTana's trash. Undo puts back every file it can and names any that couldn't come back.
- New list columns, grouped in the column picker: Basics, Quality, Sound & subtitles, Library health, Dates & watching and Enthusiast. HDR shows Dolby Vision profiles, audio shows Atmos and DTS:X, and Edition is shown by default.
- More filters adds HDR formats, Atmos and DTS:X, 10-bit, 3D, Interlaced, VFR, Lossless audio, Forced subtitles and Unwatched.
- Letterboxed 4K and 1080p films are labelled, sorted and filtered by their real resolution, and Library health no longer calls H.264 an older codec.
- The title page lists each file's video, audio and subtitles.
- Filters find a title by the genre, studio or rating you edited, and a bulk title or year edit shows on the card at once.
- A collection's count leaves out films still waiting in the Inbox.
- A share that stops answering while mounted no longer freezes the Library. A folder on an SMB, CIFS or NFS mount shows Source offline while the share is away.
- Choose a folder hides NAS housekeeping folders such as @eaDir and #recycle.
- Activity names a deleted show, says "Undone" once, and shows the folders for a move that kept the file name.
- On phones, text fields are 16 px, so iOS no longer zooms in when you type.
Blu-ray, DVD and disc images
- A Blu-ray or DVD folder shows its main feature's resolution, codecs, audio and 3D. Discs scanned by an earlier version fill in on the next scan.
- A disc image (.iso) reads its main feature too, instead of a short menu clip or SD.
- Play on a Blu-ray or DVD folder plays the main feature.
- Disc sets list Part 1 and Part 2. A DVD whose files sit loose in the movie folder is one movie, and a camcorder disc is one home video.
- An incomplete disc is named in Activity with the reason. Decoy playlists no longer pass for the main feature.
- Size, its sort and the File size filter use the main feature's size, and so do Stats and Folders.
- A disc that can't be read is tried again a day later instead of on every scan. Reload media info tries it at any time and shows it is working until it answers.
- Blu-ray 3D files show as 3D (MVC).
Playback
- Play on a title page offers Resume playback? from your saved spot.
- A resumed MKV starts at the saved spot, its subtitles stay in time, and closing the tab mid-film keeps your place.
- Next up on a show page offers to resume the episode.
- Picking a Blu-ray or DVD subtitle no longer stops playback.
- A film still being prepared for the browser starts at the beginning, not minutes in.
- In the desktop app, a failed action says what went wrong. Play on a moved file says to open Folders and press Scan now.
- In Docker, opening a file in the system player says the server has no program for it instead of reporting success.
Rescrape
- One search box takes a title, an IMDb or TMDb ID, or a provider link, and a Year box searches another year.
- A Movie, TV or Anime switch searches again as that type and can turn a film into an episode or back, with Undo.
- ↑ and ↓ move through the results, Home and End jump to the ends, and Enter applies. A new search replaces a slow one.
- Each result is listed once, and the Changes tab counts the NFO and artwork a rename takes along.
Faster
- The editor, ⌘K (Ctrl+K), Settings sections, Folders and a person's page from the cast open in the frame you press.
- Library search shows its count as you type, and the list scrolls without dropped frames with every column on.
- The desktop app starts faster and stays responsive right after launch.
- Pages, Settings sections and tabs fade in briefly instead of switching abruptly.
Accounts, sign-in and Pro
- Sign-in starts with Continue in browser. Use email instead still sends a code.
- A new account can try Pro free for 3 days right after sign-up. Start free trial opens checkout already signed in.
- Pro is US$7 a month or US$60 a year. If you already subscribe, your price stays the same, and Settings › Account says so.
- Sign-up has Email me product updates and Share usage data boxes. Accounts that never made a usage data choice are asked once.
- An account that has to agree to updated terms is no longer told to sign in again.
- On a NAS or server, a claim code pasted with a hidden character is accepted, and the website tab opened to link the device closes once it is linked.
AI with your own key (Pro)
- With an Anthropic key and nothing chosen, AI Vision uses Claude Sonnet 5.5 and the other AI tasks Claude Haiku 5.5. A model you chose before stays.
Command line and MCP
- metatana scan --move takes the film's NFO, artwork, subtitles and extras with it, and metatana undo brings them back.
- New read-only metatana list and metatana inbox. metatana scrape says why a match waits and names the extras it leaves out.
- metatana scan and metatana scrape no longer stop on "database is locked" while the app is open, and metatana scrape no longer prints hundreds of rate-limit warnings.
- metatana scan treats a Blu-ray or DVD folder as one disc, links extras, skips files still being copied and refuses an empty path. Ctrl+C ends it cleanly, and Activity shows "Stopped scanning".
- metatana rename --dry-run lists the files that move with each video, and lists the files it leaves alone apart from real failures.
- metatana export with an unknown filter field stops with an error instead of exporting everything.
- sources add --type mixed adds a Mixed folder, and a mistyped scan path says no folder exists there.
- The CLI and MCP say plainly when the account needs attention, including when updated terms need agreeing.
- MCP organize takes whole title cards and can organize in place. Organize and rename refuse a relative output folder.
Docker and NAS
- The image follows UMASK. TrueNAS passes 002, so folders and NFO files MetaTana writes can be changed by the rest of the apps group.
- When the mounted media folder is empty, Choose a folder, Add folder and a drop say so and link the setup guide for your install.
- The images are about 185 MiB smaller.
- With separate web and background containers, finishing a drop's Rename after the background container restarts no longer fails.
Desktop and security
- 2.2 runs on Electron 44 and Next.js 16.4.3, with their security fixes. Electron 44 needs macOS 13 or later.
Upgrade notes
- 2.2 updates the library database once. After that, 2.1 can't open it. MetaTana saves a Before upgrade backup first, so you can go back to 2.1 with that backup.
- On first start, 2.2 repairs titles earlier versions saved wrongly. NONE editions are cleared, films merged into one title get their own, a show's trailer saved as a film moves under its show, and episode numbers shown like S05E102 are fixed.
- A film that an earlier version saved with its series' ID goes back to the Inbox for you to check.
- The first full rescan reads every file's media info again, once. This can take a while on a large library on a NAS.
- A 3D .m2ts file scanned before 2.2 still shows as 2D. Reload media info on it fixes that.
Known issues
- Right after a drop's Rename, a Library Rename may move files again, because the drop's tidy naming differs from your saved naming patterns.
- A two-episode file's NFO gives the second episode the show's name, so Jellyfin shows "Pilot / Friends".
- "Black and Chrome Edition" in a file name is not read as an edition.
- On Free, after you add a TMDb key, a drop's recheck can leave some anime and shows waiting or at No match.
- Write NFO doesn't follow the Settings "Write artwork URLs" and "Include stream details" choices yet. In preserve mode it drops Kodi's <lockdata> and replaces the NFO's ratings.
