Getting Started

MetaTana is a local-first metadata manager for media you already own. It scans the folders you choose, identifies what is there, and helps keep metadata, artwork, sidecars, naming, and playback clients consistent.

Start Here

  1. Install MetaTana on a desktop, with Docker, or from the Unraid or TrueNAS app store.
  2. Follow Add Your First File Or Folder. It walks through sign-in, making metadata ready (active Pro, or a free personal TMDb key), keeping safe file defaults, the first scan, and review. The app has guided steps for getting a free TMDb key and checks the key with TMDb before saving it; see API keys: guided TMDb key setup.
  3. Review several matches before enabling any file changes.
  4. Updating from 1.x? Read Upgrading to 2.0 for where each old page went.
Start small Add one representative folder first. Docker and Unraid users can mount it read-only while they check paths and matches, then enable writes only for workflows that need them. A read-only folder scans and is watched as usual; only file changes such as NFO, artwork, rename, organize, and delete need write access.

What MetaTana Manages

  • Folders are the folders MetaTana watches and scans. A declared Movie, TV, or Anime type is stronger evidence than a filename guess.
  • Library holds the reviewed identity, metadata, and artwork MetaTana trusts, with where each value came from.
  • Sidecar files and destinations are optional outputs such as NFO files, artwork, subtitles, trailers, or organized library folders.
  • Sync keeps compatible playback clients and Trakt aligned with your local library.

MetaTana does not acquire media. It starts with files already on disk and works between your library and your player.
