Use AI Vision For Hard Files
File names and provider search identify most files. AI Vision is for the rest: cryptic file names, titles the providers don't list under that name, or names that point at the wrong title.
Step 1: Know which AI you are using
MetaTana has two kinds of AI, and both need Pro:
- AI Vision (hosted): looks at frames from a file to identify it. It uses your Pro account and AI credits, and needs no key of your own.
- AI Insights (your own key): Ask AI in ⌘K, collection suggestions, duplicate advice, and Clean up names…. It uses your own Anthropic or OpenRouter key from Settings › Providers › AI keys.
The AI Insights tools are in the Library: open Needs attention, select Show all, then AI Insights. To ask about your library in plain words, type the question in ⌘K and pick Ask.

Every AI feature in MetaTana needs an active Pro plan, including AI Insights with your own key and the AI key test. On Free, AI features show the Pro offer instead. With Pro, "AI not configured" in AI Insights means your own key is missing. Confirm your plan in Settings › Account.
Background scans never spend hosted AI credits. On Pro, AI Scrape runs when you ask for it: from Rescrape, from Library, or with AI Scrape on a Pick row in the Inbox. When Autopilot leaves files it could not match, Home says how many need AI Vision, and AI Scrape… there asks about every unscraped title at once, with the credits it may use, before anything runs.
Step 2: Open Rescrape for the file
AI Vision for one file lives in Rescrape. In Library, open the wrong or unmatched title and select ⋯ › Rescrape… (or ⋯ › Wrong match…). For a file waiting in the Inbox as Pick, use Compare… (or Search…) on its row.
Step 3: Select Ask AI Vision
Ask AI Vision sits in Rescrape's left column, under the file's details.

Select Ask AI Vision. MetaTana takes frames from the file on your computer, sends them with the file's name hints to the hosted model, and gets back a suggested identity.
Step 4: Review the suggestion and apply
Rescrape shows the suggestion, worded by how sure AI is (an unsure guess reads differently from a clear identification), then searches the providers for it. Pick the right result, then select Apply match, or Review changes to read the changes first.
Bulk AI identify
To identify many titles at once, select them in Library and choose AI Scrape N… in the selection toolbar. Library › Unscraped also offers AI Scrape all N…. It asks AI Scrape N titles? first and says how many credits it may use. Results show up in Activity for each title.
Bulk AI Scrape also works like this:
- It applies an AI answer only when it passes the same checks as Autopilot: the exact title, the year (or runtime), and any fields you locked. Weaker answers go to review instead of being applied.
- It stops at once when you are signed out, out of credits, need Pro, or hosted AI is busy, and the message says what to do, for example "Out of AI Vision credits. Add credits in Settings > Account, then run AI Scrape again."
- The final message counts matched, need review, and failed titles.
Ask AI to pick the match
A title held in review because its title or year did not line up (for example a film saved under its original-language name, or a remake with no year in the file name) shows Ask AI next to Approve match.
- Ask AI searches the catalog the same way Rescrape does and asks AI which result the file is. It shows the pick, for example AI pick: Amélie (2001), with how sure AI is, or says that none of the results fit.
- Use this match applies that exact catalog entry. Fields you locked are still kept.
- Ask AI is part of Pro. It uses 1 AI credit, and asking again about the same file is free. If hosted AI does not answer and you have an AI key in Settings › Providers › AI keys, you can choose Use my own key. On Free, Ask AI opens the Pro offer.
- Only the file name, its folder name and its length are sent, never the full path or the file.
Let Autopilot pick with your own key
Autopilot never spends hosted AI credits. With Pro, to let it pick matches on its own with your own AI key, turn on Settings › General › Matching › Use my AI key in Autopilot. With it on, a title held for its title or year is applied only when AI is very sure of the pick; anything less stays in review. A picked match never renames files on its own. The same switch lets Autopilot and scans use your key for AI Vision on files they could not match at all. On Free, your own key is never used.
Privacy boundary
The hosted call sends frames taken from the file and its name hints: not the whole file, not your library, and nothing about other titles. See Skyhook: privacy and data.
